#2. Unique Features, Categories & Details

“Any fool can write code that a computer can understand. Good programmers write code that humans can understand.”Martin Fowler

Part of the Journey I had to undertake was this, and looking at this quote I'm pretty sure almost all person's are thinking about them self at the start of the quote. He's really right! Think about your future self, coming back to work on a project you did a year ago and not understanding ANY of the code you wrote despite it working. That's what this is talking about, I'm hoping for the features that I plan to put in will help to facilitate and nurture person's to grow easier and more performantly with coding.

Here's an outline of some of the features I've already implemented  (& implemented further) into the book since the first blog post:

  • Unity Tips - It's a section filled with professional and jaw dropping techniques that you can do and use for not only programming in Unity but also inside the Unity Editor, that will help to enhance good hobbits & make you stand out more like a pro that can also help other beginners with these advanced yet, simple techniques. This section is all a contribution from a software engineer in UK who's been making some really advance tutorials solving problems to things developers didn't think was possible! Check out his YouTube channel.
  • Scripting Terminologies - Part of what makes it so troublesome for beginners trying to code in Unity are the variables and not being able to understand what they are even doing. To help decrease the pent-up confusion  & frustration this can present, I've included a page that explains with terms and variables listed in dictionary format with examples to help you understand there use which breaks down more of the barriers that not understanding can create discouraging beginners.

Interesting Details to Note

  • I've also established  more support networks so that person's from the Jamaica Game Developers Society will contribute to the book by sharing some of the scripts they use in there projects and have found effective as well as Tips that can help you in using Unity better! This too is to let you know that there are other game developers from Jamaica that are making HUGE waves in the Gaming World and as a Jamaican, you can too.Jamaica Game Developers Society

The book currently has :

  • 6 scripts across 4 categories,
  • A collection of 30 FREE Resources (and will be adding and reviewing more) that I personally wrote reviews on to say which of the assets best compliment the next for use in 1 project for beginners that get the book whether as a .pdf or physical copy so they too can find premium free assets that can make there beginner projects stand out phenomenally to compliment the simple, yet advanced scripts provided in the book.
  • A Category of Unity Tips provided by a fellow game developer in UK, who provides tips that aren't basic at all!

  • A FAQ Category dedicated to answering simple yet troubling questions beginners tend to have with not only using Unity, but also programming in it. Providing clear answer to the point and detailed examples and walkthroughs where needed.

More Categories?

There's still a few more categories that I will also be implementing in the future as well, a few are:

  • A Debugging & Troubleshooting Category, there's not many guidance in helping person's to understand how to debug and troubleshoot when errors arise in the project, and even as experienced as we are, some time or another we will meet some error or bug that needs fixing, but learning how to read, understand and tackle some of these errors are IMPORTANT elements of becoming an Independent developer, which is the aim with this book, to help create some more sense of independence as a beginner, weak in programming in the features of the games they want.
  • Links to Quizzes and Exercises geared to help you level up and test how much you've grown with understanding how to code in Unity, designed and posted by myself and questions from some Unity Quizzes available to me. These quiz will be designed based on knowledge provided inside the book.
  • Game Jam Habits to help keep things efficiently, structured and fun using some best practices and habits to make your Game Jam flow feel good, and light!

The developments are a bit slow at the moment, however I am making more time to work on this and get it out before the year ends. I will be releasing another free PDF version soon to help those preparing to sit exams in June/July to help them dominate and be stronger for the exam. After that, I'll mostly be posting the blog to keep person's who have and are interested in the books development to know about it up until it's full release here. There might be a special Game Jam version release for Jammers to use, that part is still uncertain interms of development at the moment though.

Link to Download is below, Like this Blog post if you enjoyed it, share with other beginners that could benefit from this. Might be about a week before my next post, will be doing them as things develop enough to share.
